Though twee-pop and grunge-rock exist parallel to each other, the two genres have rarely come together in cohesive matrimony. Their mutual exclusivity has perhaps prevented an act like Broken Water from Olympia, Washington from happening sooner. Olympia has long since been a hotbed of musical activity where twee and grunge styles both came into respective cult stature, and what makes Broken Water’s “Hi-Lo” such an interesting single is the counterbalance of these regional legacies: delicate pop and heavy grunge. Broken Water takes a moment to sludge out in between the dulcet verses of “Hi-Lo”. Lumbering power chords give shape to the the track’s adenoidal melody that in turn softens up the alt-rock drone. The band’s second LP, Wrought is slated for a March 24 release on Twin Cities label Night People Records.
Broken Water will celebrate the release of Wrought in their hometown with fellow Olympians Naomi Punk and New York’s PC Worship before hitting the road for a spring tour. You can view their tour dates after the stream of “Hi-Lo” below.
