The nine men of the Lessondary crew work together as talented, unabashed purveyors of boom bap sensibilities. Recently, two of its members, London’s Che Grand and Brooklyn’s Von Pea, dropped “Mental”, a cerebral exhibition of slick bars. Produced by Grand, the MCs trade bars about their lyrical supremacy and consternation with modern rap over a bright synth loop that floats above spastic percussion.
In between preparing the group’s upcoming Ahead of Schedule LP, Grand is “Still eatin’ off the bars that your favorite bought” off him. Not to be outdone, Von Pea dashes across the track with a charismatic verse in which he’s “lookin’ for the children of those 21 MCs, you can get it with your pops.”
Pea waxes further on the record, noting he wasn’t, “inspired when Jay-Z brought Oprah to Marcy” because they did it with talent, whereas “these new suckers barely gotta show up.”
Pea, Grand and the rest of the Lessondary crew are hoping to show up in grand fashion this June 24, when Ahead of Schedule is set to release. “Mental” can be streamed below.
