Kenneka Cook, Moonchild

We’ve all spent time staring at the moon – though our inspirations were variant. For Richmond-born singer Kenneka Cook, the cosmos served as a muse for her debut record Moonchild, which was released late last month on American Paradox records. The album showcases Cook’s rosy vocals over jazzy, soulful production.
Cook recalls over e-mail that her voice was “the only instrument that she had access to” as a college student. She would soon learn to create songs on her laptop, using the live loop process to craft compelling soundscapes. That technique is at play on Moonchild, but Cook has since found numerous instrumentalists to collaborate with and refine her sound. Moonchild was recorded entirely in producer Scott Lane’s living room in a three-month span.
The finished product impresses on tracks like “The Practice” and “My Universe,” which she treated to a unique video which shows an entire neighborhood following her, enchanted by her sound. Cook probably hopes that the same thing will happen for Moonchild as it’s songs travel throughout the world.
