On Pure X's latest single Nate Grace calls heaven a feeling with the encouraging words "you can have it any time you want" and though the sentiment initially feels soothing, the accompanying video reminds us how dangerous we can be to ourselves when left to our own devices.
The unsettling images that transpire in the video for "Heaven" challenge the backbone of lyrics like "you can have it any time you want" and "the kingdom is in your heart". Alone Pure X's "Heaven" could be heard as a spiritual—our favorite comedown band goes Christian country—but the video severes the notion, seeking the most secular and alienating of lifestyles to keep the emphasis on Grace's assurance that it doesn't matter who you are, heaven is obtainable.
Pure X's Angel is out now on Fat Possum.
