There’s a new Philly-based hip-hop band out here. Hardwork Movement, a 9(plus) piece ensemble with four lead MCs, has had a busy summer. They opened for Redman and Method Man, setting the vibes for the hip-hop vets’ famously energetic performance with their own brand of vibrant, boom bap-leaning live hip-hop. They also wowed crowds at Firefly and XpoNential music festivals.
Their live instrumentation sets went over so well that the group decided to record their new project with the five piece ensemble for the first time. Their For The People EP is a 7 track fusion of flutes, trumpets, keys, and hard drums ripe for the MCs to take their turns rhyming on everthing from racial harmony on “Dance With Me” to reaping the benefits of an “all or nothing,” 25/8 grind on “Like This.”
The bands’ instrumentation feeds, with compositions progressing and taking new shape as each rhymer assumes the mic, saving the project from potential monotony – though the dazzling “Spun” puts a live spin on the traditional breakbeat/crisp drum beat.
Hardwork Movement succeeded with this EP, making sure that their fans can take their live experience with them after the show.
