Mitski is taking a turn in direction with her new album, Bury Me At Makeout Creek. The classically trained singer is known for creating personal and complex orchestral songs with unique textures and instrumentation. With the upcoming album, Bury Me At Makeout Creek (off the excellent label, Double Double Whammy), Mitski turns toward the fuzzy rock and roll we’ve come to expect from Exploding in Sound bands like Krill and Ovlov.
Latest single, “I Don’t Smoke”, slowly builds to one of the most arresting choruses of the year: “If you need to be mean, be mean to me/I can take it and put it inside of me/If your hands need to break more than trinkets in your room/You can lean on my arm as you break my heart.” It’s the loudly distorted guitar that takes precedence on “I Don’t Smoke”, combined with Mitski’s stunning vocal prowess the result is a mind-blowing dichotomy of orchestral pop and fuzz rock.
The album drops on Double Double Whammy on November 11 and you can catch her this Thursday with LVL UP at The Silent Barn.
