Deerhunter, “Revival”

Because we wanted to wait until it was trending on Hype Machine to post it.

Now that the Vampire Weekend and Ariel Pink sailboats have passed, Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest is probably the most anticipated record of the year (seriously, Beggars Group is on fire). So it was only a matter of time until some leaked tracks were climbing the meme charts. But it wasn't supposed to be this way.

Bradford Cox and co. created an e-mail list using flyers to attract people to sign up to get a password to a site where you could hear the songs. Some symbiotic marketing ploy between the physical and viral worlds we suppose, the kind that momentarily makes us feel like computers aren't completely taking over our lives. Unfortunately, someone didn't check their intern references, because one of them couldn't wait to tell all his twitter buddies the password. No e-mail list sign up needed, whoops!

Bradford commented about the matter on his Facebook.

if I spent all that time hanging up flyers I wouldn't post the password
to the secret site everywhere. The rest of the world will hear the
songs soon enough… but whatever, if you want to be “mr. cool tweetman
msgboard outlaw” go for it. you earned it.

“Revival” sounds good. Really good. But Deerhunter doesn't need a revival — not when little kids are covering your tunes.
