As Philly’s own electric soul pop Vita and The Woolf – comprised of Jennifer Pague with help from Adam Shumski (drums/percussion) and Dane Galloway (live guitarist) – preps for the release of Tunnels in June, we’ve got the next piece of music – piece of the puzzle, if you will – that is to unfold before us. World, please meet “Sun Drop”.
The track starts off relatively opposite to how you assume it might, with deep bass and a mysterious feel to it all. It lightens a bit with the vocals, though Pague isn’t necessarily known for her twinkling, light voice. What she delivers is a dark, robust catalogue of notes, with a melody that drives you through the track and makes you feel the passion and devotion she has put into the song as a collective whole.

What was the first track or album you remember listening to, and who introduced it to you?
Does that first musical encounter have any bearing on what you create now?
That first musical encounter absolutely has some kind of bearing on what I create now. Obviously that’s not the type of music I try and create now, but I can’t deny my six year old self.
Do you think being from Philly has any bearing on your sound?
I’m technically from Downingtown about an hour outside of Philly, however my band has prospered in the city so I understand the correlation. Philadelphia has a very rich musical history which I respect. however, i’m actually mostly inspired by music coming out of Europe.
What’s the origin story of Vita and the Woolf?
The name originates from the love relationship between Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf. It just happens to be that I’m also obsessed with wolves and I adopted a husky a couple years ago – so the name has a bit of a double entendre now.
Your track “Sun Drop” brings its own intense, freeing ambiance with it. What inspired it, specifically?
My main influences on ‘Sun Drop’ came from James Blake and Radiohead. I love the bass synth drops in Blake’s music and really tried to capture that in this song.
How do you imagine people listening to the track? What do you hope to get from it?
I would hope that it brings that tingly feeling music can give to people. It’s kind of an intense song but I also hope it might inspire people as well.
You’re about to be a part of the Harvey Milk Festival. What are you most excited about?
I’m really excited to hang out with some cool people and hopefully make some new fans. I’m also honored to be part of a great festival honoring such an important figure in the Gay rights movement.
What else is coming down the funnel for you this year?
It’s hard to say exactly, but hopefully a bunch of touring! We also are setting our sights on Europe in the fall so stay tuned. Excited to finally get Tunnels out into the world for people to hear. Mark your calendars for June 16th!
