Cavanaugh is the name of an imaginary housing development in the fictitious city of Detroit, Florida. It is also a collaboration between Southern Illinois dorm pals Open Mike Eagle and Serengeti. These days the duo make plans to travel the world together as indie rappers. These days Open Mike Eagle and Serengeti record moody tracks together in which they imagine themselves as maintenance men observing the habits of the residents—interpreting them into downtrodden yarns (“Screen Play”)—and churn dependency into abstract crab buckets (“Church”). Cavanaugh is their dark, twisted fantasies running wild over Open Mike Eagle production.
Featuring guest appearances by P.O.S. of Doomtree, Busdriver, and Hemlock Ernst (rap alias of Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands), Time & Materials is rife with blue collar weirdness that often lies in the undercurrent of Serengeti’s most inspired moments. Open Mike Eagle operates as producer, a first for his career, and in doing so has given new, legitimate life to the producer-on-the-mic synecdoche.
