This past Wednesday, November 19, San Francisco native, black metal band, Deafheaven, took to the stage at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Fans had the opportunity to snag “tickets” to such an event when Deafheaven announced a short free tour put on by Converse Rubber Tracks.
On stage, front man George Clark is a performance artist. Throwing his hands up in the air like a conductor, summoning the energy of the crowd and visibly turning it into fuel to help ignite each word he screams. His facial expressions were frightening but fans welcomed him to come close and they reveled in the achievement of Clarks spit splashing their faces. Never before have I felt such a symbiotic relationship between crowd and band. As to be expected, Deafheaven were loud but what I didn’t anticipate was how beautiful the melodies of a menacing band could be.
Deafheaven stuck to playing most of their material from Sunbather, threw in their most recent single From the Kettle Onto the Coil and closed it out with the head-banging ballad Unrequited. They are wrapping up their tour for Sunbather and confirmed via twitter that their third album should be out by 2015. Hopefully it will not take too long for that new Deafheaven material to hit our ears and fulfill everybody’s metal side.
