I’ll keep this short and to the point. Man Man killed it. And how couldn’t they? Half the room were disciples in face paint, and all left satisfied at the sermon they just witnessed.
Javelin were good, but unable to reproduce the full sound exhibited on their singles. The flimsy sonics were only amplified in the giant echoing room of NYU’s Kimmel Center. Meanwhile, Born Ruffians were just as white as could be. Take one part Vampire Weekend and one part Cold War Kids; making sure an oxford shirt and a flannel are both clearly visible, and add in some sing-a-long chants over unmemorable, arythmic instrumentation, and you have the Ruffians. They weren’t bad, they just left me wishing I could wash the white off.
