Pterodactyl’s acoustic release party at Eat Records

The sun-streaked vistas of Pterodactyl‘s latest are just so expansive that they couldn’t fit into a single release party.

Worldwild, out yesterday on in-house Oneida label Brah Records, sees the Brooklyn noise-punk trio-turned-quartet at their most optimistic, with each percussive crunch and shriek of guitar blending into broadly painted swaths of melody. While the band will present the album in its full electric noisiness at Secret Project Robot on Saturday, for release day, they opted to isolated the newly streamlined melodies with simple acoustic instrumentation at Greenpoint’s cozy Eat Records.

Eat lived up to their name with a preview of the full dinner menu they’re launching at the start of May (I tried the young collards and brioche, both simple and delicious), then Brah compatriots Company opened with a set of folk songs well-suited to the acoustic format. By the time Pterodactyl took the stage in three piece-format (Joe, Matt, Jesse), harmonizing over gentle swishes and strums, the tiny space was filled to the back. Key selections: new single “First Daze”, classic “Esses”, and a cover of Parts & Labor’s “Little Ones” (off of Recievers), drawing amiable heckling from actual P&L bassist/singer BJ Warshaw.
