Carolina Funk – Various Artists

This stateside release of a UK compilation (the fourth in the Jazzman Records series) reminds us that there's always a new discovery within 60s/70s funk and soul, particularly among regional acts.

The collection focuses squarely on artists from the Carolinas, all of which are just as fierce as nationally known groups from that era. In fact, Carleen & The Groovers could have given the J.B.s a run for their money on “Can We Rap”. James Reese & The Progressions supply the laid-back groove on “Let's Go (It's Summertime)”, the horn section leading the song through its paces.

For the Soul Impossibles, soul power equals black power, and the band’s selection breaks down “Interpretation” for a nation on the move. Sundia brings a woman's perspective as she challenges her broke-ass beau to “Stand Up And Be A Man”. The tight musicianship remains constant throughout the compilation, with some songs including the toughest drum breaks this side of Clyde Stubblefield. A labor of love that includes detailed liner notes, band photos and original 45 images, Carolina Funk should satisfy the choosiest of crate diggers.
