Alex G’s music is special in its ability to create a feeling that you might not be able to name but that lingers anyway. His first studio full-length, DSU, communicates moods and colors fluently, with narrative swimming just below the surface.
His video for “Hollow”, directed by fellow Philadelphian John Vizzone, has a darkness that echoes the song’s shadowy chords and lyrics. It begins with a staticky image of an old man smoking a cigarette, then the mask is peeled back and we turn to Alex, bathed in green and red light. Kaleidoscopic pictures of pictures, band members in creepy masks, and Alex’s face all come into vision inside and out of a glowing screen. The fluid interplay of light and shadow is potent as he repeats entrancing lines like “Don’t take a trip, don’t let me down.” It’s all too easy to stare in and get lost.
Released by Lucky Number, the video anticipates the UK release of DSU from the same label on November 10. Alex G is currently touring North America and has some UK dates now as well, listed below.
