Bishop Nehru, “Midnight Reflecting”

With his deft lyricism, New York rhymer Bishop Nehru has been heralded by critics and artistic peers as a promising purveyor of classic Hip-Hop sensibilities. Yesterday, Nehru unveiled visuals for “Midnight Reflecting,” a stream-of-consciousness as pensive and ruminative as the title would suggest. The 19-year-old starts off the track noting he’s, “lost in my thoughts” before expounding on his fractured mindstate.

The Raph Ofina-directed visual is a clever ajdunct to Nehru’s lyrics. The camera is shrouded in a blue tint that’s perfect for the proceedings, turning a conceivably pleasant day in the park into a glum milieu ripe for the MC to admit his heart is “raining with tears.” The viewer is left to ponder if the downcast surroundings are a result of Nehru’s perspective or whether the environment full of “cowards” and wack MCs has eroded his optimism. Perhaps, like with most internal quandaries, it’s a bit of both.

Ultimately, Nehru finds a pleasant metaphysical resolution in the David J. Nazaire-produced track, noting “me and the universe been connected like routers, cause I know what’s in my inner ‘gon reflect on my outer.”

“Midnight Reflecting” is a single from his recently released Magic 19 mixtape, which is meant to be an appetizer for his forthcoming debut album, due out later this year.
