Premiere: Connections, “Cul de Sac” & “Tough City”

Columbus, Ohio's Connections caught our attention with the release of their album Body Language for Anyway Records a few months back, and today present a live look and listen to non album cuts, "Cul de Sac" and "Tough City" recorded as a session at their hometown, Mug & Brush barbershop.

If the music of Kevin, Andy, Adam, Dave and Phil was played in salons and parlors across the states, perhaps more of the DIY crowd would be more into the classical haircut tradition. "Cul de Sac" rocks with the suburban disaffection and boredom of the modern day, resonating in lyrics like, "these days are overrated". Even in the apocalyptic visions of chaotic the metropolis of, "Tough City", there is something affectionate and appealing in their delivery of the urban games of survival of, "running down the alley 'cause the streets are insane, fire on the highway and the streets are insane". From neighborhood idle behavior to tales of living on the mean streets, Connections bring together snapshots of modern living through DIY ballads that already us curios to hear the follow up to Body Language.

We talked briefly with Connections on hanging out and performing barber shop-wise as we talked holiday plans, with hints of recordings in the works.

Tell us about recording "Cul de Sac" and "Tough City" barber shop stylee for Mug & Brush.

The Mug & Brush is an old school barber shop located on High St. next to the legendary Blue Danube diner. It's tiny, so we had to improvise. And we were promised free haircuts and shaves in the future. We basically set up, drank some beer, and played.
