Dave Heumann, “Holly King on a Hill”

In the year when his band Arbouretum was on hiatus, Baltimore’s Dave Heumann got the chance to explore a slightly different style than usual with his songwriting. The collected work from that period comprises his new solo album Here in the Deep. Produced by longtime PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish and featuring other Baltimore musical luminaries like Walker Teret of Lower Dens and Jenn Wasner of Wye OakHere in the Deep is a warm-hued, expansive, meditative folk-pop record that owes as much to Lungfish as it does John Renbourn.

The visual for the beautifully droning “Holly King on a Hill” was directed and animated by Louisville experimental-psych artist Ma Turner. Colorful, a little raw and primarily abstract, Turner’s stop-motion animation makes it easy to get lost in Heumann’s songsmithery, listening to his guitar work ebb and flow and stretch, watching the evolution and devolution of shapes.

Here in the Deep is available now on Thrill Jockey.
