Last year Giggly Boys‘ Bastards of Young cassette dragged a few emotional boulders into their post-punk scrum. Namely on “Weird Lies” and “Country Lee”. As a counter measure “Darker Shade of Pale” paves over the gushy center of the record with roaring feedback and barks from Erik Schwertfeger that beckon the blistering bleed of noise. Here, Giggly Boys are dead set to do their worst.
“Darker Shade of Pale” elicits depravity from the outset. There’s this feeling that a Giggly Boys practice, cameras rolling or not, is conducted in the dark to the bent white light of a busted strobe. There is nothing to learn or extract from the video. It is purely Giggly Boys in their element.
