It’s no secret that we’re fans of most of the output coming from Brooklyn-via-Upstate NY collective The Epoch. The craft of their heartfelt songwriting is only surpassed by their mutual effort to propel each individual as a “band leader”; all playing support for each respective member’s “band.” This fact was not lost on NPR’s Bob Boilen, who admitted he only heard Bellows because he went to go see Eskimeaux. And if you look closely, you’ll realize their bands are pretty much the same, only the songwriter is different. Boilen went on to explain why this chance encounter would lead to Bellows making a Tiny Desk appearance:
What sets Bellows apart from thousands of other guitar-bass-drums bands out there is its heart. Oliver Kalb sings about things that matter to him in ways that matter to me. His sing-song, matter-of-fact phrasing and guitar melodies are memorable, and the harmonies are lovely, with the staying power to drift in my head for days on end.
