Wing Dam, “Software”

Wing Dam, Austin Tally, Sarah Autrey and Abe Sanders, are from Baltimore. It began as Austin's beautifully mucky folk project, but has evolved to the powerful three piece it is today that possesses more post-grunge riffs than one can really know what to do with. Luckily, these three fine young specimens have found a way to harness all them licks.

Guitar chops aside, Wing Dam is on the heals of releasing their sophomore album and head out on a national tour. “Software” is the first single from the new LP, recorded in Baltimore at Mobtown Studios. Below is the premiere of the video for said track, an appropriate visual adventure that would fittingly slot right into a 1993 episode of MTV's Alternative Nation. —Brett Yale

I asked Austin about the process behind “Software”:

The process of making the video was pretty interesting. It essentially involved live video editing of projections on a handmade set, so no two drafts were alike. It features Dan Breen as a mad scientist, and was filmed at a warehouse near the H&H here in Baltimore called Myspace.

Here's some insight from the director, T.J. Domingue:

The effects software is called Lives and is made by Gabriel Finch of Australia. One of the many things Gabe has done with the software is to allow it to use a fast fourier transform to turn an audio input signal into ranged numbers able to be input to video effects parameters. He has been working on Lives since 2002, and there's a lot more features to play with.

For this video I shot footage, then captured and cut to the song in a final cut-ish program. I then used Lives for the post effects. The set for the scene used projection mapping for the background and the animations on the physical screens. Thanks to Dan Breen for starring, and Jimmy Joe Roche for inspiration and the camera.
