Reptaliens’ Week in Pop
Celebrating the news of their Captured Tracks signing—Reptaliens are readying their new single “Prequel” b/w “Olive” available March 31—and the group’s Bambi & Cole took over our Week in Pop feature with their following exclusive guest selections:
Hi, Bambi and Cole from Reptaliens here! We are super happy to share with you guys some songs and videos that we have been really into lately for This Week in Pop. We hope you enjoy it!
Vexations, “Leather Ballet”
Cole: This song has some of the best lyrics that have ever been written and Thomas “The T-Man” Hoganson is singing in his underpants, what else do you need?
Bambi: This level of bratty-sass and musicianship is like totally embodied by T-Man’s aforementioned outfit. It’s recorded and filmed beautifully and the attitude translates perfectly. Most of the band is also in a Bowie cover band called “Boys Keep Swinging” that I guarantee is as close to Bowie as you can get.
Bryson Cone, “Color of Love” (feat. Cat Hoch)
Bambi: “Color of Love” is a synth-art-pop song that you really can’t help but sing along with. The vocals of Bryson and Cat together really make you want to cry tears of love—it’s so pretty. And so are they! And also their live show is bangin’ big time with sax and everything rips hella hard.
Cole: This is a super new band that I’m really excited to see and hear more from. They’ve both fronted their own bands that are totally solid but together, I feel like they are gonna be unstoppable.
Ty Segall and the Muggers, Emotional Mugger
Bambi: The first time I watched this video I hadn’t heard the Muggers before. The music has so much energy and emotion. It’s incredible! Their KEXP performance is also my fav KEXP episode. I also love Blaque Chris’ cameo. Is he Milky Joe? I was also so bummed when I couldn’t stream it on Spotify, so Cole bought me the CD cause I was just burning through data playing it on YouTube so much. Also I love this version of Diversion—it’s so snotty!
Cole: we’ve watched this 15 minute masterpiece so many times! The make up, the story, the music; everything is so amazing. It really feels like a short film.
Loving, “She Refused to Say”
Cole: This album just randomly came on youtube one day when I was reading and I’ve been coming back to it ever since. I usually listen to the whole EP in one go, it has a really nice way of feeling like one long dreamy song. I like driving to this record. I don’t know anything about the band at all.
Bambi: Cole won’t turn this off and I’m totally okay with it.
Paul McCartney, “Arrow Through Me”
Bambi: Conspiracy theory alert: Paul IS dead and Fred Savage can be seen here playing the part of Paul, that’s why they had to make the vid so trippy. It’s also my favorite synth bass line out there and there’s a very smooth time change and you can’t help getting up and jolting around the room in a slinky groovy way.
Cole: Bambi always sound checks with this bass line. This ones a groover for sure.
Drug Cabin, “Steely Dad”
Bambi: I love the music on this whole record. The production is so simple and has so much substance, it reminds me of the Eagles or Fleetwood Mac.
Cole: Our friends in Starfucker told us about Drug Cabin and this album definitely became a summer hang out go-to. Theres an underlying twang in the album that gives a lot of songs an Americana/country feel. I really want to see them perform!
These are a collection of all the songs and videos we’ve had on repeat lately. Hope you enjoy!!
