Former Haunted Graffiti member, political scientist, and gloomy dreamweaver John Maus is releasing his third LP, We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves on June 28 via Ribbon Music.
Pitiless Censors promises to harness the “shirt pulling and air punching” of his live performance while maintaining the “tender inner space” that he deftly emotes with his own rich baritone and a cascade of electronic instruments.
The album's first single, “Quantum Leap,” pairs the manic, arpeggiated melodies of an 80's film chase scene with the moody sway of a New Wave beat; it's both atmospheric and deeply intimate, a style that is easily imitated but rarely perfected. If you're headed to SXSW, catch him at the Moog Party on the 17th at the Victory Grill.
