What a
week. Big week in pop for Wiz Khalifa with the release of Rolling Papers, Radiohead’s
release of King of Limbs, Mountain
Goat’s All Eternals Deck, and New
Kids on the Block and the Back Street Boys have joined forces and shall now
forever be known as NKOTBSB. Seems like there are lots of banal re-releases,
repackaging and live albums coming at us right now for some unknown reason. I
mean, do I really want or need an LP pressing of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Live in London? If given the choice I’ll
take Eno’s Music for Airports: Live
while I scratch my head over why Clapton’s Derek and the Dominos Layla is deserving of being re-released
for the 1,000th time. Now that I got that off my chest, here’s the week
in pop in no particular order.
So with
little to no warning, Curren$y just put out the Jet to the Next Life mixtape starring long time collaborators Trademark
da Skydiver and Young Roddy. The trio leaves the production duties to Cookin’
Soul who keep the mood mellow while you fulfill your fiduciary rite of spring
cleaning duties.
I heard from Chris of Tan Dollar about his bedroom project Horse Head.
Evidently he’s been in this band since was 14 and the members consist of the
same musicians from Tan Dollar. Chris is pretty stoked about this album Hh (that’s pronounced Big “H” little “h”) that is
available for download on his bandcamp.
In the meanwhile jam out to the bells and vocal delays that creates the best
memoryfoam-gaze I’ve heard in a few weeks.
The
bedroom rave spills out to the hallway while your derelict friends cue outside your water closet.
It seemed like barely two months ago I had to
really dig deep online to find any information pertaining to that band Yuck.
Now with that buzzy album, more SXSW appearances than “don’t move here”
t-shirts, a side project in the works and now a new song. Some might call
their schtick melodic Malkmus pop. Regardless, “Doctors in My Bed” is a fun, almost
infectious B-side to their single “Get Away” that drops sometime later this
month.
