Blood Club is the newest incarnation of a solo project by the Boston-based musician Liana Helene. Formerly known as Liana’s Fire, Blood Club’s newest album UNATTACK utilizes a diverse array of samples, vocal distortions, and ambient moments in order to craft a very specific blend of noise pop. “murk” begins with a thumping beat that soon fizzes out as Helene’s voice begins to chant, “Just last night I heard you say / You were planning to move away / I really want you to stay.” These types of personal revelations are hidden throughout the album’s sound collage, and when they emerge, they feel particularly vulnerable. As Helene told The Media,
With this tape, I was focusing a lot more on very specific feelings and experiences, and relying on those to use as tools to build texture and sound for everything on the tape. It’s a little bit different than trying to compose based off of the influences of specific sounds that you really like and that are made by other people. Not to say that I didn’t rely on that at all with any part of the tape, but I was definitely less compelled by those kinds of influences.
In the later track “2 tender,” Helene’s blurry voice weaves through warbling synths before suddenly breaking into a series of blunt statements. The switch is surprising and ends as quickly as it began. This, perhaps, is the best way to sum up UNATTACK; constantly evolving, yet it delivers a comforting intimacy.
