Crocodiles go instrumental and free

San Diego's Crocodiles are notorious cool cats. Dressed to the nines in leather and Wayfarers, even in the dead heat of summer, its the brand of stylish psyche-rock that typically expects a small investment to be among the cool. At least that's what we thought until today.

With sophomore record Sleep Forever weeks away as well as a U.S. tour, Crocodiles are in the pilot seat of its Hype Machine, offering a free instrumental EP that features the artsier side of the band. The Fires of Comparison EP is four songs of style denial. “Kill Joe Arpaio” is chock full of kraut-rock pulsation and political jargon, “A House With Skin Like Yours” is on drugs that cause tracers, “Fires Of Comparison” is on DMT and “Hearts Reprise” is of the trendy elevator filler genre. These are the songs that would have split up the poppier ones on Sleep Forever had Crocodiles tried to record Summer Of Hate 2. They refrained from such rapper-chicanery and made an EP out of it.
