Upstart New York outfit CVS at Night corrals former members of the indie outfit Evi Antonio and metal group Yellow Eyes alike, disparate backgrounds that bassist Adam Brodsky says were unified by a mutual love of The Champs’ “Tequila”. In the spirit of another era, however, CVS at Night’s forthcoming, self-released 7-inch debut is indebted to the most palatable, svelte psychedelia and chamber-pop of the 1960s, only vivified through contemporary production. The b-side, “Olivia”, opens with a breezy groove cast in the canned fidelity of car stereo AM radio, but quickly explodes into vibrant color. Vocalist Mike Antonio’s textured lilt rests atop a melange of acoustic and electric guitar and, on the buoyant chorus, welcomed piano accents. An absorbing debut, “Olivia” feels impeccably in-the-pocket and constructed from deceivingly simple parts. Further, it’s a pop song that offers greater rewards with each successive part.
