Del Caesar, “Lie To Me”

Post Author:

Brooklyn garage/psych rockers Del Caesar are slated to release EP 2, the follow up to their fantastic self-titled debut, on November 11th via Reheated Spaghetti. In anticipation of the release, the band shared their second single “Lie To Me,” premiering today exclusively at Impose.

“Lie To Me,” with its pounding drums, chord-driven guitars, and ‘60s soul inspired vocals, calls to mind legendary artists like The Rolling Stones and The Sonics as well as more modern garage-influenced groups like Twin Peaks and The Mystery Lights. Bassist Eric Arikian’s previous experience as a lead guitarist shines through on “Lie to Me” as his nimble, danceable bass lines carry the verses building to the track’s explosive chorus.

Recording directly to tape has become a trend for garage groups, particularly those associated with or mimicking the Burger Records sound, though in the case of Del Caesar, the monophonic, stripped-down analog recording feels less like a product of garage-rock revival than authentic rock & roll, especially during the call-and-response chorus which itself builds to a fuzzy, riff-centric jam.

Speaking to Impose, Del Caesar frontman Aaron Lloyd Barr described the inspiration for “Lie To Me:” “This song is based around Ben’s animal drums. That’s the life blood of the song. It starts off with big Keith Moon drum fills, and then resolves into this smooth driving War-style cowbell driven verse. Eric and I are just along for the ride. As for the lyrics, the song is about how people rarely say what they mean or feel. Not that they don’t want to, but that it’s really difficult sometimes to go deep.“

It’s this kind of simple, relatable concept that makes Del Caesar feel so genuine; there’s no air of pretension surrounding Barr or his bandmates, no indication that they hold themselves to be anything more than a group of guys making some damn good rock & roll.
