Although it all began as a project by Blake Hanley on vocals and guitar and Enrique Lara on drums and congas, Ghost Lion expanded this summer into a four-piece, adding Mike Torres on bass and Chris Kapica on keys and synth. They’re making waves with their new, more robust, sound, and have actually secured a monthly residency at Mid City Yacht Club in Los Angeles. We’ve got the premiere of their latest, “Way Up”, right here.
When people classify the band as “tropical post-punk”, they’re not lying. Immediately there is a beachy, ocean vibe to the song, something very original to this fun band. But with this song comes an outstandingly pop sound, allowing us to really feel the positive lyrics as they are sung – beautifully, might we add – by Hanley. If you’re going through a tough time, you need to listen to this self-love anthem.
“‘Way Up’ is purposefully an upbeat song that talks about a hopeful journey from a dark place that was a part of my life for too long a time,” explains the band. “Maybe like other people have experienced, sometimes a certain friend can come into your life who can reach out and pull you out of a ditch.”
