Jeffrey Novak, “Pictures On A Screen”

Cheap Time's Jeffrey Novak has released two solo albums outside of his Nashville project Cheap Time and both were flailing odes to avant-pop and its early 70s creators. On his third record, the forthcoming Lemon Kid, the tribute to Ray Davies is more overt than ever—in the title alone, “Pictures On A Screen”, we see a callout to The Kinks' “Picture Book” and it's like a modern-day update on the classic. With unpredictable pop techniques and movement that is both scuzzy, upending, and caterwauling, there's nothing like a new take on that retro sound, especially since avant pop will more or less always be in style.

“Pictures On A Screen” comes from Novak's upcoming Lemon Kid, out on November 19 through Trouble In Mind Records.
