Over the past couple years, Rhode Island rhymer Khary has impressed the hip-hop universe with a malleable flow and refreshing, hilarious honesty as typified by today’s “Cowboy Bebop Freestyle.” The jazzy, subdued, instrumental was produced by slom, and fully explicated by Khary during a mid-song summation that it reminded him of the “Spike in Space” episode of Cowboy Bebop.
The rest of the track is tinged with rapid-fire, nonsequitur lyrics that are dubiously self-deprecrating and bring to mind Charlamagne Tha God’s “under sell, over deliver” ethos. We learn that Khary cried during the end of Lion King, his “sex game is only aight,” and “ain’t come weak with this s—t since my ex-girlfriend Deborah.” With all that considered, first time listeners will also learn he’s a technically superior MC with a strong grasp on how to own a soundscape and make it his own with wit and lyricism.
