It's a rare day when Impose is able to cover not one but two musicians out of Dunedin, New Zealand. If we're being honest, it's not often that we get a chance to cover even one in a week, but today was a lucky day—with the announcement of the Verlaines reissues and the recently released Mavis Gary tape out on The Attic, Dunedin is getting its due on this Friday in New York. Mavis Gary, a soft-touching glam rock singer whose music sounds like a nostalgic callout to jangly pop and Big Star and also surf pop and girlish shift dresses, makes an imprint with his Pin Me Up release, ten songs of coy singing and unprocessed, soft-strummed electric guitar. It feels like a blushing flower that grows out of a dark shadow—with lines like “Daddy never loved me quite as much as you,” the underlying severity isn't far from the surface.
