The news of a Kanye and Jay-Z collaborative EP is pretty darn huge. But it's only an EP, possibly something thrown together in haste to keep Jay-Z relevant after his recent decline in the market. The news of a collaboration EP between Asher Roth and Nottz does not pack the same jaw-dropping shock value, but the EP has the potential to change a lot of Roth haters minds.
Nottz is one of the streets' most coveted producers. Asher Roth is one of frat row's most coveted rappers. So to call the Rawth EP an unexpected pairing is a dramatic understatement, although the first time I ever accepted Roth's rap abilities was over the Madlib “Answers” beat for “Muddy Swim Trunks”. So I recognize that Roth is more versed in the trademark skills of a true schooler than his “I Love College” single would suggest.
“Enforce The Law” rides a feedback tone that most rappers might shy from selecting for its rockist principles. Roth and Nottz have no qualms though as the two deliver a 16-bar verse each – no chorus. Roth keeps the tongue-twisters fresh with his Eminem circa '96 flow, while Nottz earns his stripes as a prodcuer-on-the-mic with lines like “electrified / drink red bull and pesticide / and goat milk, tell me dog can you stomach this?”
No release date is set on the Rawth EP yet.
