There are a bunch of things I love about Pink Grafitti by Secret Cities. I like that they have crafted the perfect album opener with “Pink City” — a song that sounds like time travelers going back to the sandbox to play the Panda Bear solo album for Brian Wilson and telling him to “reach even higher” than Pet Sounds.
Of course
that's impossible and Secret Cities know that. They seem to recognize that so much has been done and said before, that it's nearly impossible to really create anything original with the template they're given. But somehow, they do.
It's hard to find fault with Secret Cities. Their album is beautiful in every sense of the word. It somehow finds the common ground between early Slumberland singles and all the pretty, post-New Weird American junk that's coming out these days. This stuff is perfect for all the rides you take with the top down and all the picnics where you are sure to get lucky. It's precious (but not sweet) and textured, and does all the right things at all the right times.
I have no complaints about this.
