Brooklyn’s progressive punk collective Sister Helen – comprised of Nathan J. Campbell (vocals), Chris Krasnow (guitar, vocals), Eva Lawitts (bass, vocals), and Clint Mobley (drums) – is focusing on the upcoming release of their farewell self-titled concept album. As sad as we are to see them go, we couldn’t be more excited to see what they’ve got in store for us. We’ve got the exclusive premiere of their song “The Blending of Blue and Green” right here, which, according to Eva, “was actually the first song we worked on as a band after we decided we were breaking up.”
Hard hitting instrumentals serve as the backdrop, as we are used to hearing from this phenomenal band. The energy that begins the song bounces along at mid-tempo, allowing us a peek at a jazzier and slightly more complex instrumental later as “I don’t want to know you now” is crooned in a way that makes it feel less melancholic than the words would indicate. Once you start to examine the lyrics in their entirety, you realize there is much more to this song than what once you thought.
“Lyrically, this song is about jealousy and about how easy it is to see somebody else as an impossible standard to measure up to,” explains Nathan. “It’s about seeing the best in others and only the worst in yourself. Sometimes an unhealthy ego experiences love for someone else as hate for oneself–at least mine does!”
Their record release show will take place on January 9th at Shea Stadium.
