One of the most overlooked aspects of sampling is a producer’s ability to put a listener on to older music they otherwise never would have heard. It’s something certain classic acts may not consider in the midst of their ire towards the beatsmiths who re-appropriate their music.
There’s no better time than the summer Olympics to heighten your international music consciousness, and in that regard, allow Baltimore producer Tek.Lun to introduce you to 1970’s Nigerian band MonoMono via his colorful flip of their “Tire Loma Da Nigbehin” single.
Tek.Lun has a sizable following who enjoy his eclectic sample choices, from splotching a Lil Wayne verse atop a boom bap beat, to “Aburoy.” a buoyant 2-minute offering.
The track’s dense percussion is the core of the track, providing a soundscape that would make a two-stepper out of the stiffest person. “Aburoy” is a pleasant mixture of funk, electronic and hip-hop that does write by the original record.
