Tennis are the popification of “lo-fi”

The cover of Tennis' 7-inch

Like the new Magic Kids track before it, this is the high fructose corn syrup of garage and doo wop-tinged pop music, something the timeline from Vivian Girls into Wavves and across to Best Coast cast into some kind of specific time and place in the college music world consciousness, one that's now slowly receding into dance and chillwave mush and Ariel Pink's Before Today signaling a newfound fondness for clean production.

Tennis may jangle their guitars but it's hard to get an edge in their with all the flawless vocal harmonies oohing it up like a high school musical.

There's no point in denying the husband/wife duo's chops, and the sincerity of their music. Here's hoping they keep making it and that their new 7-inch sells out, and after the majority of the college cattle moves on to dance music and the few hanger-ons confuse their love for “Weed Demon” with the genius of Grease 2.

Tennis, “South Carolina”

Tennis, “Marathon”
