Detroit is due for another revival ever since Jack White left the Motor City for dead or perhaps Detroit does it to itself, but the glaring issue remains that we must never forget about Detroit. The Dirtbombs' Ultraglide in Black was a retrospective covers celebration of Detroit soul, R&B and of course, Motown. The band is back on its celebration style to resurrect Detroit techno out of its urban decay.
Dirtbombs frontman Mick Collins is a nostalgiaist. In reworking Detroit classics in live instrumentation, his adjustments put little twists on the originals. For instance, “Shari Vari” sounds less like a fuzzed-out and pulsating rhythm machine and more like a sleek German post-punk track that makes you ponder, “what if Gang of Four were from Berlin?” Party Store will feature the refashioning of early Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May classics. Carl Craig even lent modular synthesizer programming to The Dirtbombs' epic 21-minute reworking of “Bug In The Bassbin”.
