For the Velveteens, three kids from Minneapolis, the past is far brighter than the future. Over the course of several self-released tapes, they’ve perfected their craft of creating impeccably pretty retro-pop that’s accented with a slightly bitter punk edge. These sounds are impossible to ignore, but on “Chico”, frontwoman Kiera finds herself left in the dust.
“Yeah, I still think about you when I walk around at night,” she admits, a blissful rhythm carrying her sentimental words. The acute pangs of heartbreak are felt with every note, from careful, dreamy guitar strums to each and every melancholy beat. Still, nothing stings quite like the truth: “My little Chico, I don’t know him anymore/And now I’m longing for a love like we had before.” In vein with all that the Velveteens do, the track is the kind of undeniable pop charmer that nuzzles right into your achy heart.
“Chico” is the first track off the Velveteen’s debut full-length, Sun’s Up, out early December via Old Blackberry Way for vinyl and MJ MJ Records for cassette.
