A couple weeks back, we talked with London hip-pop outfit Kero Kero Bonito, who’d just released their debut record, Intro Bonito. An amalgam of J-pop, rap, 8-bit, and more, the album—released on Double Denim Records—incorporates a bit of everything under the pop umbrella.
The remix EP, Bonito Recycling, takes the sonic extremes on Intro and tapes them together brilliantly on six new tracks. It features remixes from PC Music producers Danny L Harle and Kane West alongside an incredible slowed-down, pitch-shifted version of “My Party” by London-based producer bo En. Also included are mixes by Et Aliae and LA whiz producer Spazzkid. The weirder elements of the already-avant-pop album are drawn out and twisted, and the composite is a cross-section of Kero’s sounds, the fast and slow and glittery and distorted. What frontwoman Sarah Midori Perry says on “Sick Beat” still rings true—Kero Kero Bonito “Could win out any game, whether you’re a boy or a girl or a synth or computer.”
