Latino Punk Fest 2016 Returns This Weekend

Latino Punk Fest returns this weekend for its third year with three days of music and workshops at Brooklyn venues Aviv and Don Pedro. The festival, organized by local musician Aldo Hidalgo, features over 30 Latino punk bands traveling from across the country as well as Colombia, Spain and Canada in an effort to support “unity and solidarity” across marginalized communities. The festival is explicitly D.I.Y., not-for-profit (in past years organizers have listed all money recieved in the name of transparency) and all-inclusive. The organizers make it a point to host the festival without the help of sponsors or other promoters.

In addition to music throughout the day and night on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, LPF has expanded this year to include a “Counterculture Gathering” at Aviv on Sunday afternoon. The daytime event will include panel discussions and workshops led by local and international activists, addressing topics like gentrification, sexism and racism within Latino communities. Other lecturers will speak on the histories of left-wing subcultures from around the world (Anti-Fascism in Montreal, Punk and Anarchism in the Dominican Republic). Local and traveling zines, distros and food will also be available.
