Punk Island is an annual free all-ages punk show that began as part of Make Music New York and has evolved into a seven stage 100-band seven-stage all-day full-on festival. Punk contains the kind of multitudes even the longest day of the year can’t hold in full, but every year around June 21 (the summer solstice) the organizers try and come close.
Especially rad is the Brooklyn TransCore stage, which features queer bands from all over both the punk and the gender spectrums, including witty pop-punk BKTC stalwarts Penguin, Girlcrush, and the Homewreckers, as well as feminist synth punks Bitchtits, emotive hardcore survival-punks CUTTERS, sludgy crusty spikypunks Heavy Negatives, nihilist revolt noise punk Dreamcrusher, and beloved Olympia punks RVIVR.
Don’t let the Staten Island location scare you away—the location is right by the landing for the Staten Island Ferry, and a free boat ride on a summer day is actually a nice bonus.
Punk Island 2015 takes place on Sunday, July 21. Check out the full list of bands, lineup, schedule, and details on the Facebook event.
