Stream Future Punx’s new album, This Is Post-Wave

“Preparation for our future must start today” warns Chris Pickering of Future Punx on the opening track off their album This Is Post-Wave, streaming ahead of its digital release on Friday. This is the Brooklyn band’s debut LP after releasing their 2014 EP I’m So Inspired and a split single with Dull Tools label mate Parquet Courts.

Future Punx define themselves as postwave: “It’s an obvious pun on ‘post-punk’ and ‘new wave,’ indicating our love of those genres and declaring our intent to create something new by bringing some of their ideas into the future.” Their music certainly sounds like a mutant product of the past and distant future; on the same track that they imagine the year 2053, they glance back at 1979 by referencing a line from Talking Heads’ “Life After Wartime” (“This ain’t no disco / This ain’t no rave”). The band balances out this abstract, self-aware pondering with a playful sense of humor, fun synth grooves, and thin, spazzed out guitar leads that’ll convince you that perhaps dancing is the key to unlocking the future.
