It seemed inevitable that Merill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs would eventually look beyond her own songwriting capabilities, ever-developing drum skills, and knack for entrancing performance, and enlist the production chops of outside help. Her forthcoming album Nikki Nack, due out May 6 via 4AD, welcomes Malay (Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys, Big Boi) and John Hill (Rihanna, Shakira, M.I.A.) into the unpredictable freak-folk fray, paving the way for a fresh rhythmic palette. NPR just put up an early album stream, painting the full picture her two already-released singles, “Water Fountain” and “Wait for a Minute,” and record megamix teased earlier this spring.
