Wavves, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Zulu, Sextile, & SPY ignited an explosive night at SOMA

This past weekend, concert promoter Peachy threw their annual live showcase at SOMA in San Diego featuring a bill of over a dozen excellent acts. Straddling the lines of alternative rock, punk, hardcore, darkwave, and anything else in between, the evening conjured one amazing stage spectacle after the next, with each act bringing something uniquely potent to the table.

With two alternating stages, bands traded off sets seamlessly, leaving zero breaks between performances and leaving audiences rocking from start-to-finish. Bay Area hardcore titans SPY sent the crowd into a bloodcurdling frenzy, with stage divers, crowdsurfers, and moshers filling up every available inch of space on stage and in the front pit. Afterwards, Los Angeles electronic new wavers Sextile brought heavy doses of dancing and thrashing thanks to a bevy of industrial techno synth mayhem. Zulu followed them up on the side stage with a pummeling, intimidating slew of hardcore and powerviolence bangers that sent the crowd spiraling into chaos.

As the night wore down, Los Angeles garage-psych marauders Frankie and the Witch Fingers served up a hypnotic blast of apocalyptic riffage, throttling rhythms, and brain-expanding lyrical sorcery. To top things off, local heroes Wavves reminded the San Diego crowd of their prodigal son status, unleashing staticky lo-fi pop-punk soundscapes that you could metaphorically surf through from beginning to end.

Peachy reminds us that the San Diego music scene is still packed with potential. We need many, many more events like this in the future. Until then, check out some of the highlights below.
