This past Sunday June 4th, the Nobody Safe Tour rolled through the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO, and – needless to say – it left its mark. Headlined by Future, and other big name group Migos, the hip-hop tour has been hitting stops all over the country and it has not upset the attendees in a single city.
The openers started around 6:30, beginning with Zoey Dollaz, who was able to engage with the crowd and get everything warmed up with a short set. The next on the list was a personal favorite of mine ASAP Ferg. The “Trap Lord” did not hesitate to go immediately into the crowd and performed his entire set with the people. He played hit after hit from his catalog and really got the audience into it with his energy and connection to the people mentality. The last opener was Tory Lanez, who mixed hip-hop bangers, with smoother r&b, even a rendition of “Bump N’ Grind” by R. Kelly.
Then came Migos, the rap trio that has taken the world by storm in the past couple of years. Members Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset bring a chemistry that no other group can even hope to attain. While one member raps, the other two provide ad-libs, this is reminiscent of what the Beastie Boys once did. This video shows exactly what I am talking about (NSFW language). Just like ASAP Ferg, Migos played hit after hit, engaging the audience with ease. Migos are easily one of the most influential acts in the game right now, but the following act might be the one at the top.
Future has been around for a while, but he has skyrocketed to the top of hip-hop and general charts over the past few years. Coming off two projects, Future and HNDRXX, he has been on a hot streak that does not seem to be coming to an end any time soon. Future only needed a stage, his dj DJ Esco, and some male dancers, who most of the time just vibed to the songs that were on and did their own moves, some coordinated and some freestyled. The energy was palpable, not a single person in attendance was sitting down. One of my favorite moments was when Future brought out ASAP Ferg to perform Ferg’s hit “New Level”, a track that even if you have never heard it before, causes one to nod their head and move with the hard hitting beat. When he closed with his current chart topping hit “Mask Off”, it almost felt like he could have just played the song on the sound system and walked away and everyone would have been okay with it. But, there was so much passion in his performance that there was never a time when you thought he was phoning it in. The set was about an hour and a half, but I wish it would have lasted for 3 hours because his catalogue is so extensive that he could only hit parts of songs instead of performing the whole track. A performer of Future’s caliber is able to touch on so many of their hits, while still giving the people what they want in full tracks.
If you get the chance to see the Nobody Safe Tour, or any opportunity to see the artists within this tour, you have to jump on it. They all bring a unique energy and create an environment where everyone can just rap and move together without judgement.
