Caboladies' CD-R coulda been a contender

Caboladies

This would have easily been one of my top albums of the year, with a little bit of hindsight, but I totally missed out on it, what with the typical onslaught of DIY releases.

This CD-R by the Kentucky bred sound sculptors was done when the group was still a trio. However, while I’m no expert on Caboladies discography, this one offers different elements tied into their usual, thoughtful drone soundscapes.

The album, which consists of a three-part suite, has beautiful synth drips and those kind of enveloping, soft drones that are of the “sun-kissed” and “ecstatic” variety, separated a bit from their other work by hypnotic percussion lines and rhythm guitar. This adds a backbone to their fuzzy, lost-in-thought atmosphere that ties together the twisting lines of their joyful exploration.

Definitely check out Caboladies if you haven’t.
