Fans get the “Platonic Abstract Ideal Version” of “Fresh Born” from Offend Maggie
Deerhoof has stumbled on a revolutionary new copy protection. None of this password-protected bullcrap either, Deerhoof's new song has been released in a non-digital format which will only be available to those who are able to 1) read sheet music, 2) play said sheet music, and 3) play said sheet music well enough to approximate how Deerhoof would play said sheet music. So, in order to hear the song you have to 4) be Deerhoof.
Considering that #1 already eliminates 3/4 of the musicians out there, this is some serious copy protection. A pdf of the song was distributed at Friday's Prospect Park show, and is available as a pdf on this website
Already people all over are recording their own pirated versions of “Fresh Born” and sending them in, in attempts to destabilize the already shaky music world. This is really hurting the band — now other people are not making the money that Deerhoof should rightfully be not making from people downloading their music for free.
The band should really go one step further and not record an album at all. That way they'd not only save some money, but pass off the recording costs onto the consumer.
There's one benefit of this new format versus the older, more audio format we're used to: You can actually understand her lyrics. I mean, you can understand what the lyrics are, you still can't understand them.
