The story goes that Dave Longstreth, master of Dirty Projector ceremonies, found an empty cassette case of Black Flag's Damaged, and filled the empty space with his own imaginings of that classic hardcore outing, one that was an early childhood love affair for him. Check the example below.
The reinterpretation, titled Rise Above, lends new meaning to that most iconic of Black Flag anthems: (“They distort what we say / Rise above / Were gonna rise above / Try and stop what we do / Rise above / When they cant do it themselves”). It's Dirty Projector's fourth LP, slated for a September 11 release.
Also interesting to see how long Longstreth's current “cast of characters” will remain before being “rotated” out. It's true that Longstreth goes through musicians frequently, but the current lineup of Brian Mcomber, Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian has been sticking around for a while, elevating the quality of his live performance and the expansiveness of Dirty Projector's musical potential. His cast has also lately included Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear (the band DP opened for on a number of US dates), who helped to produce Rise Against.
Dirty Projectors will play Europe for the first time in support of the album, and another North American tour is in the works.
