The Mae Shi have been through a number of lineup permutations and this current one doesn't like to leave LA. Foreigners will get one or three chances, depending on their location, to catch this densely structured, rollicking “art-thrash”. I think the “art” part hints that it's more experimental than normal thrash, but to my ears, it's just prettier. Plus, The Mae Shi don't take kindly to those pesky silver discs that keep cropping up in the record stores, so they're putting their next album out on a good old cassette tape, at least for their tour. (Moshi Moshi Records is releasing the upcoming HLLLYH digitally and on CD in November.)
They're joined on their self-booked vacation by Yea Big + Kid Static, who are the art-hop to Mae Shi's art-thrash, I guess. We'll call it what we want, but Yea Big + Kid Static are roving into new, weird sounds in the hip hop/electro landscape.
