Since last year’s Give It Up, Bay area producer CRUELS has been exhibiting his futuristic take on R&B, melding elements of electronic, house and dance into a groovy package that evokes the gamut of emotion. Ditto for “Easy,” his latest single, which features LA-based singer Rush Davis.
Over a gorgeous palate of graceful, luscious synths and uptempo drums, Rush raves about the object of his affection. The track is a winner on the dance floor and beyond. Whereas many producers would have went with airy, lithe vocals, Rush’s smooth voice has a tinge of sadness and gruff appeal that gives it a soulful dynamism.
With it’s heartfelt lyrics, Davis’ vocals, and CRUELS’ dense, luminous production, “Give It Up” succeeds as a mature take on R&B that’s upbeat and fresh while sidestepping gimmicky, en-vogue (for now) sonic elements. It has pop appeal but is firmly rooted in authenticity.
